  • Tax Tips : Top Ten Tax Time Tips
    1. Gather your records now, It is never too early to start getting together any documents or forms you will need when filing your taxes: receipts, canceled checks, and other documents that support an item of income or a deduction you are taking on your return. Also, be on the lookout for W-2s and 1099s, coming soon from your employer. 2. Find your forms. Whether you file a 1040 or 1040-EZ, you can download all IRS forms and publications on our Web site, IRS.gov. 3. Do a little research. Check out Publication 17 on IRS.gov. It is a comprehensive collection of information for taxpayers highlighting everything you will need to know when filing your return. Review Pub 17 to ensure you are taking all credits and deductions for which you are eligible. 4. Think ahead to how you will file. Will you prepare your return yourself or go to a preparer? Do you qualify to file at no cost using Free File on IRS.gov? Are you eligible for free help at an IRS office or volunteer site? Will you purchase tax preparation software or file online? There are many things to consider. So, give yourself time to weigh them all and find the option that best suits your needs. 5. Take your time. Rushing to get your return filed increases the chance you will make a mistake and not catch it. 6. Double-check your return. Mistakes will slow down the processing of your return. In particular, make sure all the Social Security Numbers and math calculations are correct as these are the most common errors made by taxpayers. 7. Consider e-file. When you file electronically, the computer will handle the math calculations for you, and you will get your refund in about half the time it takes when you file a paper return. 8. Think about Direct Deposit. If you elect to have your refund directly deposited into your bank account, you will receive it faster than waiting for a check by mail. 9. Visit IRS.gov often. The official IRS Web site is a great place to find everything you will need to file your tax return: forms, tips, FAQs and updates on tax law changes. 10. Relax. There is no need to panic. If you run into a problem, remember the IRS is here to help. Try IRS.gov or call our customer service number at 800-829-1040.

1040 Income Tax Return Forms Can Be Filled And Filed Online, Too

There are four forms in the 1040 income tax return series of forms. However, the 1040 is the starting form and is meant for individual income tax return filing purposes. The 1040 is a standard form updated each year with the year printed on the form. This form is used by full time US residents to file their income tax returns.

The 1040 income tax return form is often referred to as the 'long form' by tax professionals and tax payers. Those individuals who have no complications when it comes to calculating their tax returns, such as those with itemized deductions, can use the other version of the form; the 1040A also called the 'short form'.

The 1040 income tax return form is a two-page form and this does not account for the attachments. The first page requires the tax payer to fill in information about dependents, income items, personal information, and income adjustments. The second page of the 1040 requires information that is used to calculate credits and allowable deductions, the tax amount the payer is due to pay after applying funds already withheld by employers, lotteries, and other places against income tax dues or payments already made towards tax liabilities.

The 1040 income tax return form has eleven attachments, which are fairly easy to understand and fill in without any professional help. However, for those who would rather have professionals help them with the 1040 income tax return form, there is easy access to online professionals twenty four hours a day, just a mouse-click away – so, filing returns doesn’t get easier than this!

Many tax professionals have online tax software that is fully automated. For a small fee one can have access to these online income tax forms where they are virtually walked through the entire process. One can take as much time finding and sifting through paperwork, such as bills and receipts, and fill in the online tax forms. Then, at the click of a mouse button, the tax returns are filed and confirmations sent to the user.

Though the 1040 is a simple form to fill in, the online services have made it a lot easier and convenient!
